This past weekend I found myself walking through Ventura Harbor. This harbor is a great place to explore and has many places to walk. It is very relaxing and has much to see including sealions and many other animals. The there is a different atmosphere in harbors compared to beaches because of what they are used for. Since harbors are ment to house boats and are generally changed much more drastically, they create a different feeling. Ventura Harbor creates a culture much different than beaches and even harbors in the area.
Since much of this harbor (in the part I was walking) is just houses and not businesses of any kind it feels very friendly. There are many families out walking with their children and dogs. A small man made beach was located near the house where I was staying with children playing, a small park, tennis courts, and a place for people to gather and grill some food. Although marina park is nearby especially in the pictures above, it is still a decent walk to get over there and we did not venture that way. The picture on the left shows the Jetty that is at Marina Park Beach and how it shapes the beach. This walk was a great way to see the harbor while getting to know people who live in the area!
I used the pictures taken above because of the peacfullness they brought. Both pictures show how calm it can be there. I found that this peacful state showed how the culture is in this area. When at the small beach in the harbor with people grilling and swimming no one seemed to be stressed about anything that was happening outside of this area. It was calm even when large boats drove by making waves and noise. I felt that even though I do not go there often, I was included in what was happening.
Being someone not from the neighborhood I was not sure if I would feel included in the activities. That was soon forgotten in this inviting peacful group of people. They welcomed me with open arms and cold drinks! I feel Ventura Harbor has a very inviting and laid back culture. When you go visit this area you truely get the california culture all around.
Recently I made my way down to San Diego. While down there I thought to myself why not stop and visit La Jolla Cove. As someone not from California I thought this would be a neat place to check out. While people go there for the seals, that was only just one part of this beautiful beach. I have not been exposed to many beaches due to me staying local, but this was well worth the trip. Seeing a place where local animals and humans can co-exist without either having to worry is peaceful. I felt that no matter why you went there is was relaxing.
During my trip I noticed that not only were humans co-existing with the animals in the area, but in the area there were things for everyone to do. The environment had things to offer for people of all walks of life. La Jolla Cove was a place where tourists and locals both go to enjoy their day. Although I did not go into the water while I was there, they had a lot of snorkeling, swimming, kayaking, and many other activities for people to do. Since this area is protected it seems to be a breath of fresh air away from the city. I found that the further down the coast you walk, it’s almost as if you are walking to a whole new area. There are beaches, tide pools, and many other different places to go.
I have never felt so invited to an environment so free from the city, while still being a part of it. While the area still had shops and restaurants that made it seem more like the city, they are clearly not the main attraction at La Jolla Cove. I went with a friend of mine from Minnesota who had never seen the beach before. It was a new experience for both of us. I find that with the way this beach was formed and the land around it gives people and animals the best place to relax and get in touch with nature. The pictures I took show how both animals and the land are like things you don’t get to see everyday.
Although Local, County Line Beach is a great place for people from all over to get together as a group for different activities. While relaxing on the beach just to enjoy the last of the sun, there were many people out doing whatever the beach had to offer. Things like kite surfing, rafting, to just walking in the sand. These activites, while very different, all represent the vast list of things to do while at County Line. At the time I was mostly resting on my towel, I still felt as part of the people who were out and about.
Since County Line Beach happens to be just 15 minutes away, I find myself here more than most every other beach. The beach is small and only has one business near by and seems to only be crowded on weekends and holidays. Although there is still a large amount of people going to this beach, the ocean life is very noticable. From things like the kelp covering both the beach sand and in the water, to things such as crabs and seagulls hanging around. County Line often has dolphins swimming by in the distance and much more living just below the surface. This is due to the low activity in the area compared to many other places close by.
This beach seems to have a variety of communities all meeting in the same place. On the beach there are families, tourists, and everyone you can think of. With the low population going to the beach as mentioned before, the beach here is very wide with the ability to fit many. The beach has land sticking out as seen in the first picture affecting the flow of water and sand. This affects the way County Line is hit by water, it coming in at an angle, and the wave momentum as it comes in. When you first arive at the beach, you are forced to walk down a steep downhill in order to get to the sand. The steep hill is caused by erosion in the past meaning water carried the sand down into the water. This could be due to the land on the northern end of the beach or the PCH right near by. Both can affect the way water hits the beach and where the sand is deposited.
Overall County Line is a great beach to go to for a relaxing day with the family, or to enjoy activities of anykind. This beach creates the perfect atmosphere for both children and adults who are looking for a nice spot to have room to move around and not be running over eachother. Even though there is erosion and getting down to the beach is dificult for some, the beach is very wide and good for all people. Often overlooked by many, you should not think of County Line as a lesser beach.
